How Long Do Pool Covers Last?

A common question that we get at Pool Safety Systems is, “How long will my new swimming pool cover last?” It is an important question to know and does affect your purchasing decision. Also as a new homeowner, you may have found that your pool comes with an existing pool cover. Some areas also require pool inspections. Let’s take a closer look at the three common types of swimming pool covers and how long each of them last.

Whether you have an above-the-ground pool or an inground pool, covers are important to have to protect your loved ones, whether they are children, adults or pets, in your pool.

The 3 common types of swimming pool covers include:

• waterbag or tarp covers

• safety covers

• automatic covers

Waterbag Covers

The least expensive pool covers that you can purchase, waterbag or tarp covers also have the shortest life span. They do not last long and are not durable because of the material with which they are made. Usually waterbag or tarp covers are made of a plastic woven material that is not waterproof. Waterbag or tarp covers are supported by the top layer of water in the swimming pool. These covers just rest over the water. The constant friction of the water against waterbag or tarp covers makes them break down over time. These covers stop working after a while. They also can get damaged during severe weather. Waterbag or tarp covers typically can last between 4 to 7 years maximum with normal (not heavy) usage.

Safety Covers

Safety covers are in the mid price range. Their cost can vary depending upon the type of safety cover you purchase, the material with which it is made and the size and shape of your cover if it is custom made. There are a lot of safety pool covers available today. Some are cheaply made and lack the thickness, quality and durability of well made safety covers. It is important to take some time before you buy and look at your options carefully. Safety covers do not rely upon the weight of the water in the pool to be taut. They have enough strength to stay up on their own when they are anchored to the deck by anchors and springs for your pool.

At Pool Safety Systems, we sell safety covers to our customers. The brand of pool safety cover that you purchase matters. It makes a difference in the quality of materials used, precision in custom made fittings and durability. Loop Loc is a popular brand due to its durability, color options and custom sizing. Loop Loc also offers standard pool covers as well. Loop Loc has been in business for over 50 years, providing excellent quality pool covers for households around the nation. We have learned over time that your safety swimming pool cover can last a long time if you take good care of your cover and have purchased a high quality safety pool cover to begin with.

A well made, durable pool safety cover costs several thousand dollars. If you take good care of your pool safety cover, we have found that your pool safety cover can last approximately ten years.

Automatic Covers

The most expensive to purchase, automatic safety covers have to be directly secured into the concrete. These covers are often installed right when the pool is built. This is also the most affordable way to do it because the automatic pool cover can be installed before the concrete is poured. Automatic pool covers work very quickly as you can just touch a button and wind back the pool cover into the compartment that is built into the deck. Automatic pool covers are more expensive, costing $10,000 or more to purchase. These pool covers can last more than ten years as long as the motor works properly.

At Pool Safety Systems, we recommend using a safety pool cover. This type of pool cover will last a long time and is a good investment.
